First birthdays are a huge deal (at least it was for my family), yet we don’t remember our own. You won’t remember yours either. As parents, we do everything we can to make this day one of the most beautiful days of your life. We fix a date, arrange a party, and invite friends and family over to celebrate.

This is family.

It was probably the first day in your life where you saw bubbles. You were fascinated by them and easily forgot the rest of the happenings.

This is magic.

Your mom woke up early that morning to bake you a cake, one just for you. She wanted a special smash cake, but not one of that you’d find in an expensive pastry shop. Nope, she wanted you to have something unique for you, one that was healthy and made at home with love. The result was pure perfection.

This is affection.

Days like these can be exhausting. At the end of the party you looked for some kind of repair, a protection. You knew exactly where to turn. You found your people, the ones that will wrap you in a big hug. These people, they provide shelter for you.

This is protection.

Your parents were not just celebrating your first birthday today, they are building your memories.

This is love; it’s parenting.

I felt so blessed to be part, as a family photographer and as a friend, of this important moment for this family. Nicole, the child’s mom, was my first friend when I moved here in Atlanta more than one year ago. She gave me the great privilege to assist and document this important  target in her life.
