You know that feeling you get when you anticipate something important is about to occur? I had that feeling during our last trip, before the Covid-19 breakout.

One of my most favorite things to do is to travel. Traveling with my family is such a gift. When we can, we try to spend a long weekend away. It’s not just the place we end up, but the idea of staying with my people away from home. We are free of distractions and we’re able to connect.

Our initial plan was to go to San Francisco. But as the bay area was one of the first hit areas in US, we decided to avoid planes and picked a location that would be driving distance from our home in Atlanta.

New Orleans seemed like a good option.

You might think that being a photographer is a wonderful thing while traveling because it allows for beautiful documentation, but being a mom, wife and photographer during travel can be quite challenging. So sometimes I have to let go of my “photographer” hat and ways. I have to stop thinking about the photo and just take it.

Have you even been to New Orleans?

This was my first time and I was impressed. There were so many people in the streets! It looked and felt like people were in New Orleans looking to be free. As if they were leaving behind everyday stress and worries to simply be. Our hotel, the Bourbon Orleans Hotel , was right behind Bourbon Road (one of the most crowed streets in the French Quarter). If you are in your 20s you may really appreciate this little spot; however, if you have two kids (and one afraid of loud noise), you may want to pick another place.

New Orleans is a magical city! We walked a lot. We landed upon spots that were beautifully kid-friendly, too. We spent time together, exploring a new culture. We went to restaurants (loved the creole kitchen!), visited the French Market, and even managed to workout together! We were joyful during our time together.

Outside

All these images looks strange today. Most of the United States are under a shelter in place order. We have to stay home and take care of each other. I think that Covid-19 is teaching us to look at things in a very different perspective.

All the things that we took for granted before, aren’t anymore. Hugging someone, shaking others’ hands, freely going to restaurants, entering stores to buy souvenirs, visiting markets and talking to strangers…these things are vastly different today.

Today we have to act differently to protect each other.

When we saw this local Italian store, our thoughts went back to our country, Italy.

This was our last trip before Covid-19 and it carries a whole new meaning to us today.
