Sometimes what we need is just a photo of our family.

Just a single portrait. We need it for our Christmas card, or because we want to update our desktop image, or simply because we want introduce our family during a meeting at work.

Whatever the reason is, you often feel pressure to find the right photographer.

During 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic was in full force, I was thinking of a way to continue to do my job but at the same time remaining a safe distance from my clients. For this reason I launched (like many other photographers did) the front porch session.

It was fun! And it also was a way to keep my mind occupied and gave me opportunity to spend time with other lovely people.

I want to share with you what I’ve learned from this experience and what the most frequently asked questions were.

Feel at ease.

If you are going to do some shopping to get ready for the session, be sure to wear your new clothes before our time together. Wear them at home, around your family, before our time together. You don’t want to show up to picture day with an itchy sweater!

What color?

Any color is good as long it is your color! What I’d recommend is to avoid too bright or fluorescent colors. I’d also avoid large brands and logos. You never know what brands and logos will be popular years down the road…we’re going for timeless here! Patterns are welcome! Neutral colors are the best option: cream, denim, white, beige, grey and sage. I created a Pinterest board for inspiration HERE – please remember that this is my personal taste! Truly, any color is good!

What about behavior?

This is the last of your concern. I hear you, I feel you. I’m a mother too! They are called mini-sessions, but this doesn’t mean that we have to do everything in a hurry! I usually spend some time with the kids/family before starting to shoot. I try to create a connection with your kids. You will notice below that not all photos will end up perfectly posed – often times there are my favorite! The more chaotic they are, the more personality they express. And a family portrait doesn’t need to be perfect, it just has to be real.

Where?

It’s up to you! You need to ask yourself where your family will feel the most comfortable. This may be your home, a park, at the mall, in the car, on the lake – wherever! This is a very personal choice. You decide and I’ll be there!

When?

I know many of us remember to take photos during Autumn. The leaves are beautiful, the weather is nice and this gives us time to have a photo ready for our Christmas cards! We have 12 months in a year though! The light, scenery and your family is beautiful all year long! There’s always a good time to capture your photo!

Even in a single portrait a story can be told.

These sessions are 20-30 minutes long. They happen at your home, or in another location that you love!

Love, Barbara
